Tom Racer emerged from the Los Angeles suburbs in 1997. They rapidly gained a following with their hook laden pop songs driven by a strong rock undercurrent and punk rock sensibility. The band was formed by childhood friends Mike Elliott and Erik Newton. Soon after Tom Racer's first few shows, they where signed to Slog/Risk Records and released the bands first full length CD "The Secrets Out". "The Secrets Out" received praise from press and acclaim on the college music circuit

"a band who can play pop the way it should be played - clean, loud and hard" MEAN STREET

"Steeped in a household of fascinating personalities and life-altering music, Tom Racer is carrying on the tradition of so many great influences before them with a record that's full of energy and absent of pretense" VIRTUALLY ALTERNATIVE

The band toured constantly in support of the CD and built a steadily growing fan base. The band not only engaged the young fans but fellow musicians as well. Two of those musicians were guitarist Aaron Emil and drummer Jared Summerell, who at the time had their own separate groups. The two quickly found kinship with Tom Racer. They shared similar music influences such as Ash, Foo Fighters, and the Pixies. Tom Racer needed a new drummer and were looking for a fuller two guitar sound. Seeing the opportunity Aaron and Jared joined Erik and Mike turning Tom Racer into a stronger and more dynamic band.

In March 2001 Mike Elliot left the band to pursue a career in the Military.
